Calcium in combination with other minerals can help prevent bowel cancer
Researchers are currently studying a way in which bowel cancer could be prevented through the use of calcium in combination with other medicines containing minerals.
This premise was determined by researchers after observing that a higher level of calcium helps avoid the increase in the precancerous cells from the bowel and now they are studying whether calcium in combination with other elements can help better reduce the risks of cancer, than a treatment based on calcium alone.
Bowel cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer for the developing countries. One of the main causes according to researchers is a diet full of saturated fats and with low levels of calcium and minerals.
The attempt of finding a link between a person's diet and the risk of developing bowel cancer is one of the most important issues that researchers are facing due to the fact that a person's diet is very different from the one of another individual. Patterns are very hard to find in this case.
An important observation concluded after studies, is that a diet with a high amount of red and processed meat increases the risk of developing this type of cancer.
Most of us nevertheless, do not eat according to the recommendations of our doctors and the typical Western diet has very low amounts of fruits and vegetables which contain calcium and minerals.
Colorectal cancer of bowel cancer occurs mainly after an uncontrolled growth of a cell in the lining of the bowel. If diagnosed at an early stage, the survival prospects for patients are as high as 90%. Annually, approximately 1 million cases are diagnosed, out of which up to 600.000 die because of this type of cancer.
This type of cancer represents a problem especially in Europe, where in the United Kingdom alone, is considered the third cause of death after lung and breast cancer.
The study will be funded through a grant offered by the Association for International Cancer Research and the researchers group is from the University of Michigan. The lead author is Dr. James Varandi.
