Women from the United States feel more in control after doing a mammogram

A study conducted during the period 31st of August – 6th of September 2011, concluded that 9 in 10 women interviewed feel more in control with their health after doing a mammogram.
The same study concluded that 86% of the women interviewed performed at least one mammogram in the last two years.

A mammography is an X-ray process used to detect any type of masses or micro calcifications in the human breast. Mammography scans helped reduce the mortality rate among women with up to 30% since 1990. Every doctor recommends women to have at least one mammography annually starting with the age of 40. In the present stage, mammography is almost the only way in which breast cancer can be detected and for doctors is one of the most valuable tools.
Breast cancer is currently one of the most common forms of cancer for women. It comprises almost 30% of all the types of cancer in women. Nevertheless, men can also develop this disease, but the results of the treatment have usually lower chances of success due to a late stage diagnosis. Most commonly it derives from the breast tissue and more precisely from the inner part of the milk ducts or from the lobules supplying the ducts with milk.

However, in the United States the number of centers where women can have a mammography is starting to decline. A study conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration showed that today, women have access to fewer mammography facilities (by approximately 200 units) and scanners (up to 1.000 fewer scanners).

Chair of the American College of Radiology in the Breast Imagining Commission, Dr. Barbara Monsees, declared that although the results showed that women give a great importance to the mammography analysis, t does not mean that doctors should not stop underlining the importance of this analysis.

The study was conducted by the American College of Radiology with up to 1.000 women interviewed. This study is part of a campaign launched in 2009 by this institution, called "Mammography Saves Lives"
